Deathmatch was a fast-paced free-for-all gamemode in which all players must fight to win via reaching 50 points or getting the most amount of points after the time limit is reached, as the exclusive Mercenary class. Players would start the round with a Pistol and Crowbar, with both standard and Deathmatch-specific weapons scattered around the map for the player to use; players could also heal themselves via Pills found around the map that would heal a player by 12 HP. Power-ups were also available around the map in varying forms of buffs for the player.
Deathmatch would eventually be removed from the game for a number of reasons, splitting off into Team Deathmatch Classic:
- It was too large; it felt like its own separate game.
- Any gamemode that removes classes/weapons to function goes against some of the core principles of Team Fortress.
- The code was getting to the point where if one thing was done in X, it'd screw something up in Y.
