The Nail Gun allows the Scout to trade out their hitscan, burst firing lever action shotgun with an automatic, projectile and clip based weapon. Nails from this weapon travel through the air with an arc, similar to the [[Medic]]'s Syringe Gun. This means that when firing at a moving enemy, aim slightly in front of which direction they are moving rather than where they are in order to compensate for the travel distance of the nails. The nails do not knock back enemies.
Unlike the [[Scattergun]], the Nail Gun is an automatic magazine-fed weapon that shoots a fast stream of small nail projectiles that embed themselves into enemies. The nails have a base damage of 12 each, are shot at a rate of 10 per second, are slightly affected by gravity, and are inaccurate at medium range. It deals slightly less damage per second than the Scattergun, but has sustained fire which enables a constant barrage of chip damage against an enemy. This is especially true at midrange, where the Scout can harass enemies while staying out of range from their attacks, including cutting off their pursuit by shooting nails down their path of travel. It also acts as a potent [[Sentry Gun]] destroyer, able to destroy buildings outside the Scout's typical range within seconds.

The Nail Gun works best at medium range where the Scout is just out of reach of the opponent to both hit his shots consistently and dodge incoming fire with the Scout's increased mobility. Another way this weapon can be utilised is to shoot at targets while retreating. Due to the nails being more effective at range than the [[Scattergun]], this allows the Scout to fall back and also deal massive damage to enemies following, as long as you can correctly predict their movement. The nails are also more reliable when it comes to taking out distant sentries as long as the Scout stay outside the range, the nails can destroy sentries faster than the Scattergun.
In practice, it is much more difficult to hit a moving target with automatic weapons and projectiles, and a weapon which is both automatic and shoots projectiles will inherently be less reliable than a hitscan weapon like the Scattergun. The Nail Gun therefore facilitates a "spammy" playstyle, with endless streams of low-damage nails combined with escape tactics. These features make it difficult to get consistent kills on enemies, instead acting more as an annoyance rather than a threat to be respected. This is hampered by the Nail Gun's constant need for ammo, which can abruptly end an engagement if it is not managed. It many ways, it is outclassed by the [[Pistol]], which is a secondary weapon. It has slightly less damage per second, but more individual damage with about the same accuracy, and is much more reliable at range due to being hitscan. The Nail Gun is therefore limited in use to spaces with extremely tight corridors, yet with contradictorily enough room for the Scout to dodge attacks, or as an anti-Sentry weapon, in the rare case the Sentry does not immediately kill the Scout, or is blown up by a teammate.
